What is the deal with Variables?

Do you really have to describe all the essential and nonessential variables for each process in a WPS?

And what does the Code mean by the term "describe" a variable?"

Find out in the White Paper:

This paper was prepared and published by the ASME Standards Committee IX on Welding, Brazing and Fusing as a guide to the industry.

Do you know the difference between 3G (or PG) and the Vertical Position?

Hint: they are not the same. . . .

Welder Qualification

For Maximum Efficiency in testing welders, use Supercoupons (i.e., a welder test coupon suitable for small-diameter qualification using two processes with the second process qualified for unlimited thickness), go to:

Sperko Engineering can provide assistance with this. We will visit you to ensure you know the commitment you need to make to have a "Code Stamp" and do ASME Code work. We will prepare a custom QC Program in accordance with current ASME and/or National Board Requirements. We will conduct a day of training with your designated QC Manager and others on yor team who will be part of the QC Program. The ballpark cost to get an ASME Code Stamp, including purchase of Code Books, Stamp fee, preparation of a demonstration vessel or assembly, preliminary review by your Inspection Agency, audit by an ASME Consultant and your Inspection Agency supervisor, your time and the above services by Sperko Engineering is around $40,000. For National Board "R" Stamps, it's more like $25,000. These stamps get renewed every 3 years and the cost of new code books (now every two years) and audit is around $10,000 and $8,000 respectively. Your business plan needs to be able to justify these costs; however, organizations that hold "Code Stamps" are considered a couple of notches better than average. This will open the door to new business opportunities. For a listing of those who already hold ASME Certificates, go to
